Special Reserve was introduced in 2000 for Australia. Its lower bottling strength responded to a market where alcohol taxes were tied to proof, making the expression more accessible to customers. The expression was later released into Europe and Asia.
The 50 ml miniature has been discontinued. Special Reserve is aged around six years and uses the same bourbon mash bill as the other Blanton’s expressions; it is not a rye whiskey, despite persistent rumors.
