The 50 ml mini bottle was introduced in the early 1990s. Ferdie Falk, owner of Buffalo Trace Distillery at the time, saw a role for miniatures as impulse purchases near liquor-store cash registers and on airline beverage carts, especially on routes between the United States and Asia.
Types 1–5 have a cruder stopper casting, visible beneath the horse, and Types 1–4 have no neck label. Tail position also helps identify the type, with a slight difference in rider position between Type 4 and Type 1.
The original miniature label omitted the final “s” in Blanton’s; the design changed in 1993. Types 1–5 are generally very rare. According to the official Blanton’s Bourbon website, Type 6 is currently in production with distribution limited to Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
